It has been reported that scientists from the University of California, San Francisco have been able to demonstrate that they can read brain signals by placing electrodes about the size of a post it note directly onto the brain surface to record neural activity. This latest development is unlike other brain computer interface devices which used sharp electrodes placed into the brain tissue which moved affecting readings. By placing the pads directly onto the brain surface; they don’t move which has meant that scientist have been able to obtain long term stable readings and then develop an algorithm recognising the patients brain signals and match them to their desired cursor movements on the computer. In time this technology could allow paralysed patients to control for example a prosthetic arm or hand.
