Ian completed his degree in law at the University of Surrey prior to joining Lyons Davidson and completed his Legal Practice Course at the College of Law, Guildford. He joined Lyons Davidson in 2008 and worked in Lyons Davidson’s costs department Meruit Costs working in various roles, eventually becoming the Partner and Head of Costs in 2015. Ian has extensive experience in claimant, defendant and audit costs matters, with a particular emphasis on technical and high-value disputes, CFA issues and changes in the costs litigation landscape. Ian has a wide ranging experience in drafting CFAs and CCFAs, as well as litigation funding more generally, both case specific and in terms of strategy and approach more generally.

In his costs role, Ian developed a broader position working with group leaders across the business in driving financial performance and looking at improving working practices and creating efficiencies. Ian took on the role of Divisional Manager for Commercial Delivery in December 2018. As part of this role, Ian also manages relationships with Lyons Davidson’s outsourced services which include chambers, accident investigation services and medical agencies. In addition to this, Ian manages the relationship with our Northern Ireland specialists.

Alongside this, Ian took on the role as Divisional Manager for the Personal Injury division in May 2020. As part of this role, Ian is responsible for operational performance and delivery of the division as well as implementation of the Whiplash Reform programme following introduction of the Civil Liability Act 2018. In April 2022, and as part of our ongoing strategy as part of the Whiplash reforms, the Injury Division has grown to incorporate the Defendant and Counterclaim teams which bring together the broader injury specialists across the business.

In addition to Ian’s role, he is also a council member for the Association of Costs Lawyers and Vice Chair at Citizens Advice Reading.
