On 1 March 2017, Lyons Davidson’s Leeds office held an open day for students from BPP Law School, with which we has a longstanding relationship.

BPP Law School caters for students who wish to follow LLB (Hons), Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL), Legal Practice Course (LPC), MA (LPC with Business), Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) and LLM (Professional Legal Practice) courses.

Twenty two students attended the event, a  mixture of GDL, LLB, BPTC and LPC students. The day was split into three parts, the first being a presentation on the structure and culture of a law firm, and the law firm as a business. Next, students were taken on a tour of the office and, finally, we ended the day with a networking session with employees from different departments at Lyons Davidson.

Structure and culture of law firms and law firms as businesses

Adam Green, solicitor in our Group 3 Recoveries group, gave the presentation. He went though the different structures of law firms: traditional and ABS. He advised students that they should apply to firms that have the right culture and structure to suit their needs and enable them to excel in their careers.

Office tour

The students were split into two groups. Sam Higgins and Mohammad Yusuf, both team supervisors in Group 3 Recoveries, took the students around the office and showed them the workings of busy law firm. They took them to each department and gave them information on the work we do at our Leeds office.

Networking

To end the day, the students were greeted by employees from different departments including Personal Injury, Contract Resolution, Property Disputes, Recoveries, Employment and Advocacy. They also had a chance to talk to employees from all different stages in their careers, including Paralegals, Trainee solicitors, Associates, Solicitors, Team Supervisors and Advocates.

Networking

Questions from students  included asking staff about their roles and career paths, and what it is like to work for Lyons Davidson.

All the students had a rewarding afternoon and we are looking forward to the next Open Day at the Leeds Office.
