Lyons Davidson’s Yomp for St Peter’s Hospice
On 9 October, an enthusiastic team of 13 people ‘yomped’ 17 miles over the Brecon Beacons to raise money for St Peter’s Hospice, the Bristol Charity Committee’s chosen charity for 2011.
Led by Tom Rendle of PT Troop, the intrepid group consisted of Roger Acock, Richard Voke, Jamie Chorlton, Gabor Ferencz and his partner Gabby, Amy Clarke, Harriett Parker, Katherine Price, Sam and Neil Roff, Gavin McCormick, Mark Ewing and Jeannie Parsons.
We departed from Queen Square at 7am on Sunday morning and made our way to the start of the yomp. Once there, we were briefed on the route and given safety instructions, then started out on the (very) steep 40-minute climb up Fan y Big. After a short descent, we continued with another arduous climb up Pen-y-Fan to the highest point of the climb, also the highest point in South Wales. At the summit, spirits were high, as were the 60mph winds!
After descending the mountain to a well-deserved rest at the vehicle checkpoint, we filled up with tea and food before starting out on the second leg of the journey.
This part of the route took us off the beaten track and over the mountain, Marines-style. It was, without doubt, the most demanding part of the day, climbing and descending a mountain range and crossing a river on the way. We were hampered by the weather closing in on us and the rain finally making an appearance.
We finally made it down the mountainside to the second vehicle checkpoint at the
Neuadd Reservoir. After this, we carried on for the third and final leg of the journey: a pleasant – but wet! – walk through woodland, before meeting the support crew at the end of the yomp.
The route, planned by Tom, came to a total of 27km (17 miles) and we completed it in just under nine hours – a fantastic achievement!
Thanks to everyone who took part, including the yompers, support crew and Tom himself, who all gave up their day off to raise as much money as possible for St Peter’s. We have raised more than £625 so far, and are still collecting sponsorship, so please visit our Just Giving page.
