Lyons Davidson meets community nurses from St Peter’s Hospice
Lyons Davidson addressed Community Nurse Specialists at St Peter’s Hospice in Bristol on 13 July. The hospice is Lyons Davidson’s Bristol charity of 2011.
The nurses were told about a new case, which allows hospices to recover the non-NHS portion of their costs through patients making a claim for compensation. This will be available to mesothelioma and asbestos-related lung cancer patients, and to anyone whose illness has been caused by the negligence of another. Lyons Davidson has already made successful claims totalling over £20,000 for hospices following this recent change in the law and St Peter’s will be able to benefit from it in future.
Tamara Hasson of teh Private Client team outlined the planning patients should consider when facing a serious illness. This includes ensuring that an appropriate will is in place, as well as creating a lasting power of attorney. She also pointed out that consideration has to be given to the vulnerability of patients when making such significant life choices and the need to safeguard patients so that they are free to make their own decisions with the support, if necessary, of medical staff.
