We have always been committed to staff development and encouraging alternative routes to a legal career. We have a strong record of supporting staff in furthering their education and careers through financial and practical support with studies, such as CILEx, ACL and BTEC for support staff. We have also introduced CILEx-endorsed paralegal awards in civil litigation, employment law and family law.

The first of these courses was developed by our in-house training team in 2010 to reflect the growth in the civil litigation sector. This contributed to our winning the ILEX Employer of the Year Award for 2009. The Institute of Legal Executives recognised Lyons Davidson’s commitment to staff development, stating: “Lyons Davidson not only promotes the ILEX route to its staff, it funds their study and is generous in the time given for revision and examinations. In 2010, this employer appointed a legal executive as a partner, proving to its staff that anything is possible with the CILEx route.”

Lyons Davidson has long considered Legal Executives as equivalent to Solicitors in terms of career development and opportunity. We are excited about the further initiative to widen access to a legal career comprising the introduction of legal apprenticeships. This scheme provides another route into the legal profession and aims to make a law career accessible to those who otherwise may not have the opportunity to enter the profession.

Lyons Davidson played an integral part in developing the apprenticeship initiative by providing input from a legal employer’s perspective. We are excited about this scheme and the ways in which increases opportunities for those who have ambitions for a legal career. In 2014, we welcomed our first legal apprentice and the same year were delighted to receive a Legal Sector Employer of the Year from Skills for Justice for our work on developing legal sector apprenticeships.
