Jennifer Scowen
Partner and head of the Clinical Negligence team.
Jenny joined the firm in June 2004 to manage the Clinical Negligence team and is responsible for co-ordinating clinical negligence claims for all of the firm's other offices. She qualified as a Solicitor in 1987 and was appointed a member of the Law Society Clinical Negligence Referral Panel in 2002. As such, she is a nationally recognised expert in clinical negligence claims. Jenny has experience in dealing with all aspects of funding claims. She has extensive Claimant and Defendant experience in personal injury/clinical negligence, which has given a perspective and balance when considering the health issues which arise involving claims against the health professionals. She has a special interest in birth injury work. Prior to joining the firm Jenny managed a Birth Injury Unit and several of her cases have received media attention. She has settled claims of £1.5 million and £3.4 million in damages recently and has a number of ongoing cases of a similar nature.

Joanna Laidlaw
Joanna is an Associate
Joanna qualified in 1997 and joined Lyons Davidson in 2008. She has specialised in clinical negligence for 10 years and is a member of the Solicitors’ Regulation Authority Clinical Negligence Accreditation Scheme and as such is a nationally recognised specialist. Joanna is experienced in dealing with a whole range of cases including high value birth injury claims, brain injury cases and spinal damage cases. She also has experience of fatal claims, oncology, cardiology, orthopaedic, neurological, gynaecology, obstetric and other surgical claims.

Mark Lane
Mark is an Associate
Mark was called to the Bar in 2002 and cross qualified as a solicitor in December 2008. Mark has experience in costs litigation and insurance litigation. Mark currently runs a caseload with a very wide range of cases including fatal claims.

Helen Garratt
Helen is a Solicitor.
Helen was called to the Bar in October 2007 and cross-qualified as a Solicitor in December 2009. Helen has experience of working within the Legal Department of a large NHS Trust and has previously defended Clinical Negligence Claims. Helen joined the Firm in February 2010 and runs a wide-ranging caseload.

Medical and Nursing Professionals
Within the team, we are supported by members of the medical and nursing profession, who provide an integrated role to ensure that each claim is viewed from a legal and clinical perspective. Our team comprises the following in-house medical and clinical practitioners:
Maxine Bentley
Maxine is a Registered General Nurse who also has a degree in law. She qualified as a practising nurse in 1994.
Alison Bowen
Pharmacy Dispenser and Student Studying Nutrition and Dietetics.
Elizabeth Brimble
Qualified as a Dental Surgeon in 1985. In 1995 she was also admitted as a Solicitor. Elizabeth has a unique perspective combining both a legal understanding of the issues involved in dental claims and the practical experience of having worked as a Dentist for many years.
Elizabeth Carter
Elizabeth is a practising dental nurse, having attained her qualification in 1996.
Brenda Champion
Qualified in 1967 as a Registered General Nurse. She has worked for the majority of her career with elderly people within the NHS service and within the private sector. Any issues involving elderly care fall particularly within her area of expertise.
Caroline Coltart
Caroline is a practising midwife, having qualified in 1995. She provides invaluable experience on claims concerning obstetric and gynaecological issues, as well as complications arising during childbirth.
Karen Cornish
Qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 1990 and was subsequently promoted to Sister. She has particular experience and interest in patients with breast cancer and deals with issues of screening. The majority of Karen's experience has however been in the field of ophthalmology.
Chris Evans
Chris is a Dentist and advises on dental claims.
Jane Hale
Qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 1999, Jane has experience in treating patients in emergency situations.

Registered Midwife since 1988.
Anne Moffatt
Registered Midwife since 1986.
Kelly O’Brien
Kelly has a law degree and has completed the Legal Practice Course. She has previously worked in the Lyons Davidson Clinical Negligence Department as a Paralegal and has handled a wide variety of cases including failed orthopaedic surgery, infection cases and plastic surgery.
Dr Linda O’Connell
Qualified as a doctor in 1993 but now specializes as a Freelance Forensic and Biological Anthropologist, preparing reports on human skeletal remains recovered from archaeological sites and assisting the police and other related professionals by offering advice and preparing case reports.

Susan Ward
Registered general nurse since 1979 and occupational health nurse since 1987. She has experience in a Coronary Care Unit before moving onto Occupational Health.

State Registered Nurse qualified in 1982 and has a varied career working mainly as a Practice Nurse.
