Leeds
Over the last few years, Leeds has transformed from a northern industrial city to one of the most vibrant and successful cities in the country.
With a thriving finance, business service and financial sectors, located at the heart of the UK, Leeds is perfectly placed for travelling to and from, and is the gateway to, the Yorkshire Dales. Leeds also boasts a thriving international airport and one of the busiest train stations outside of London.
Leeds is full of exciting places to visit, lively events and some of the best shopping facilities in the north of England. Since Harvey Nichols opened a store in Leeds, their first outside London, the city has been dubbed the “Knightsbridge of the North”. Leeds is a shoppers dream – from the elegant Corn Exchange, to the exquisite Victoria Quarter and the vibrant Kirkgate Market, the city caters for every taste.
Leeds is home to many sporting teams and stadiums. Sporting events in the city really pull in the crowds, with Leeds being famous for football (Leeds United), both Rugby League and Union (Leeds Rhinos and Tykes), Cricket and Swimming. The Leeds Marathon held every year is one of the highlights of the athletics calendar.
The nightlife in Leeds is lively and caters for all tastes. The exchange quarter alone holds many funky designer bars and also has a large choice of small but stylish clubs. Chain pubs and a louder scene is found in the city centre on Greek Street and Boar Lane.
Leeds also boasts a rich creative heritage. It hosts the Leeds International Pianoforte Competition as well as the Leeds international film festival and is home to the West Yorkshire Playhouse. It is also the only English city outside London to have its own opera and ballet companies – the internationally acclaimed Opera North and Northern Ballet.
